2024 Honda Prologue Touring EV Review
To many it would be a surprise to find out that Honda currently sells a fully electric SUV here in Canada. To the untrained eye the 2024 Honda Prologue Touring is a bubbly, mid-size, inoffensive electric vehicle made by one of the most reliable car brands of all time. And while you'd mostly be correct, this Honda is unlike any other Honda before it, because this one is manufactured by General Motors.
Years ago Honda and GM signed an agreement to co-develop electric vehicles in order to share the cost of development. The result was GM's Ultium platform, which underpins vehicles like the Chevrolet Equinox EV up to the GMC Hummer EV. While it's unclear how much Honda contributed in terms of engineering towards the overall Ultium platform, they do benefit from two mid-size electric SUVs from it. The Acura ZDX is the premium/luxury version of the Prologue, although it's design is quite unique compared with this mainstream Honda model.
Honda says while the basic chassis and most of the front up to the firewall is shared with vehicles like the Chevrolet Blazer EV, the rest of the design is unique to Honda, with their own take on the interior design and layout, exterior, and even their own UI on GM's Google Built-In infotainment system. Some telltale GM signs are present, such as the steering wheel and keyfob, replaced with a Honda badge to confuse the average consumer, while other features such as wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto are exclusive to the Prologue.
The Prologue Touring comes in with an as-tested price of $72,772.50 with the winter floor mats installed, a few thousand more than the comparable stable-mate Blazer EV, and less than the Acura ZDX and Cadillac Lyriq. With an estimated range of 439 km in the AWD configuration, it's a bit lower than we'd expect, coming in with range closer to the compact consumer crossover EVs we've driven recently.
While the Honda Prologue is a nice effort from Honda, albeit and expensive one, we feel theres better ways to spend your money on a larger electric vehicle. Even Honda admitted this wasn't the marriage they were hoping for, and announced an end to their GM partnership shortly after the Prologue launched. We're hopeful Honda will be able to play catch up with their electrification strategy, after a vehicle like the Honda Clarity PHEV which we loved, and never sold well for the brand, they seem to be behind where they should be.
