2020 BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupé Review

BMW has added two more doors to the 8 Series along with some new features for the 2020 BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupé. We're going over everything you need to know about this four-door grand tourer.

Last year we featured the 2019 BMW M850i xDrive Coupé, the G15 was the first new 8 Series model produced since the E31 ended production about 25 years ago. Since then BMW has added a number of additional trims and body styles including this Gran Coupé. With a base MSRP of $122,100.00 CAD, the Gran Coupé is the most affordable M850i available in Canada.

Our full tour and review of the 2020 BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupé goes over what's new for 2020 including the soft-close doors and enhanced BMW Driving Assistant Professional, and the differences in interior and exterior dimensions with the four-door version. We go over the options selected on this specific car including the Executive Package, Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, M Technology Package, Display Key, and the high gloss black kidney grilles and trim option.

The exterior design has changed slightly with an improved wheelbase of 201mm, the overall length has also increased along with the rear track of the 8 Series. Interior dimensions have increased as well, 5mm more front headroom for the driver and passenger, but the headroom, legroom, and shoulder room have all improved significantly for the rear seating space. BMW has also added quad-zone climate control along with better rear seats, power side sunshades, and a panoramic sunroof.

We go over some of the sales data from 2019 for the BMW 8 Series in Canada and the United States, and how it compares to the Mercedes-AMG GT including the AMG GT 4-Door. We then take the 2020 BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupé on a comprehensive real-world road test to see how this M Performance car handles itself on the road.

We're testing Pirelli Sottozero 3 winter tires in our snowy Québec climate. During our road test we discuss how Launch Control works, the different drive modes, and we test to see the 0-100kph time on this vehicle. We talk about how it feels on the road compared to the Coupé and how it compares to the 2020 BMW X3 M Competition we drove a few weeks prior.

We wrap up our full episode of TestDrive Spotlight on this luxury sports car with our real-world fuel economy testing along with our final thoughts on what we liked the most about this car, and what we hope BMW improves down the road with model year updates.
