2020 Ford Explorer Platinum AWD

Ford is investing in large, RWD SUV platforms, which is great for enthusiasts like us. Our Snapshot is on this 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum AWD.

We want to extend a big thanks to Yergeau Ford in Acton Vale, Québec for letting us borrow their new 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum to film this episode. Find out more about their dealership.

It's rare that automakers spend the time and money investing in something like a RWD SUV platform, since consumers these days are less interested in the technical design of their vehicles and worry only about price, features, and looks. Ford's new CD6 platform underpins this 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum AWD, and comes with a power boost with the new 3.0L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. Our episode goes over what's new for this 2020 model year compared to the 2018 Ford Explorer Sport we featured before.

We discuss the exterior changes on the 2020 model and compare it side-by-side to the 2019, features such as the LED headlights, Ford Co-Pilot 360 Assist, foot-activated rear liftgate, power folding mirrors, remote engine starter, FordConnected 4G LTE, and keyless entry. Our $66,149.00 MSRP vehicle comes with the Star White paint and optional 21" aluminium rims.

Inside we find the light sandstone leather seating with front heat, ventilation, massage, and power, along with driver memory, easy entry/exit, and Platinum embossed in the seat backs. Second row seats have heat, easy exit, side window sunshades, and a third zone automatic climate control system, along with smart device charging via USB. The new 12.3" driver information computer cluster takes the all-digital cluster found on Lincoln products to a new level, with new graphics and richer content. The new 10" portrait infotainment system comes with a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, SiriusXM Radio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, navigation, and a 360º camera system.

We take the 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum on a road test to talk about the selectable drive modes, new 3.0L EcoBoost engine, 10-speed transmission, the all-wheel drive system, and how this vehicle performs and handles on the road. The acoustic laminated front glass helps to reduce road noise, while the panoramic sunroof helps to let more light into the cabin. We talk about how this vehicle compares to the 2018 Explorer on the road, as well as one of the recent three-row crossovers we've driven; the 2020 Kia Telluride.
