BMW 3 Series vs. 4 Series

Ever since BMW announced the F36 4 Series Gran Coupé we've wanted to compare it side-by-side with the F30 3 Series Sedan. So we have. It's time to find out finally what the differences are with the 3 Series vs 4 Series Gran Coupé.

Our episode of TestDrive Showdown was made possible with the support of BMW Sherbrooke, Part of Groupe Park Avenue, who allowed us to film their 2018 BMW 330i xDrive M Sport:

When BMW announced the F30 3 Series in 2011 they alluded to the fact that the coupé would be split off as the all-new 4 Series. They also brought out a four door version of the 2 door car, and called it a Gran Coupé. TestDrive has always been curious as to what makes the Gran Coupé different from the sedan, and if there's a reason BMW charges a $4,500 premium over a similarly equipped 3 Series sedan.

Our Showdown goes over some of the exterior aesthetic differences with a 2019 BMW 430i xDrive Gran Coupé with the M Sport package and Premium Package Enhanced. We compare it with a 2018 BMW 330i xDrive M Sport, but reference it with the M Sport Edition II package, as options would be identical between the two models. Given the resources available to us, we weren't able to get the exact F30 3 Series we needed, but can show the major differences.

We discuss the mechanical and technical differences between the 3 Series sedan and 4 Series Gran Coupé and see what the interiors of each car have to offer. We then wrap up with a rundown of what's different between these two vehicles, and try to figure out why both of them have to exist in the first place.
